2016 Deputy Mayor Council Vacancy

On November 3, 2016 Tay Township Council heard presentations from six applicants for the Deputy Mayor position and ultimately selected Councillor Dave Ritchie for the appointment to Deputy Mayor.

As a result of Councillor Ritchie being appointed as Deputy Mayor, the position of Councillor Ward 2 held by Ritchie was declared vacant at a special meeting of Council on November 9th. At the same meeting Council reviewed its options for filling the Councillor Ward 2 vacancy and voted to fill the vacancy by an application process to select a candidate for appointment to Councillor Ward 2.

Mayor Warnock announced the Deputy Mayor appointment in a media release issued following the special Council meeting on November 3.


On September 26, 2016 Deputy Mayor Bill Rawson resigned his seat on Tay Township Council for personal health reasons, effective immediately.

In accordance with section 263 of the Municipal Act, 2001, S.O. 2001, c. 25 the Council vacancy must be filled by either an appointment by Council or via an election held in accordance with the Municipal Elections Act, 1996, S.O. 1996, c. 32, Sched.  At their September 28, 2016 meeting of Council, Tay Township Council decided to fill the vacancy by means of an appointment process that will involve an open application process where Council will hear from candidates (applicants) and then vote to determine a sucessful candidate to fill the vacancy.  As a result, the following process is underway.

September 29, 2016 - November 2, 2016 2:00pm: Application period is open for eligible candidates (applicants) interested in filling the Deputy Mayor position vacancy.

November 3, 2016 9:00am: Council to hear from candidates (applicants) and vote to fill the vacancy by appointment of one of the candidates.

November 9, 2016 9:00am: Successful candidate takes oath of office at Special Council Meeting.

Individuals interested in becoming a candidate may download an application form here or obtain one from the Tay Township Municipal Office at 450 Park Street, Victoria Harbour, during regular business hours.  Completed and valid application forms, along with government issued identification and proof of eligibility must be received by the Township Clerk by 2:00pm on November 2, 2016.

Please Note: The position of Tay Township Deputy Mayor also fulfills the role of Simcoe County Councillor at Simcoe County Council.  The Simcoe County Councillor role requires significant time commitments in addition to the time committments required for the role of Tay Township Deputy Mayor.
