What can I burn?

No yard waste is allowed to be burned in any area that is located on the Georgian Bay side of Highway 12 Tay Township, the Village of Waverley, Bramhall Park, Candlelight Village and Nielsen Road Subdivision. Yard waste may be burned in rural areas not listed previously.

How big can my fire be?

Total size of any fire can be no more than one cubic metre.

Things to remember when burning:

  • Everyone planning to have an outdoor fire needs a permit;
  • No yard waste burning is allowed in residential zones;
  • Permits may be purchased online at any time or at the Municipal Office during regular business hours;
  • In order to get a permit you must either be the owner of the property, or have permission from the owner;
  • Notices of Fire Bans will be posted on the Township website and on the answering machine at the Municipal Office; Fire Permits are NOT VALID during a fire ban;
  • Burning without a Fire Permit will result in a fine along with potential costs associated with putting out the fire;
  • Whether recreational or non-recreational burning, the size of a fire cannot be more than one cubic metre;
  • Complete open air fires by-law provides additional information.

Fire Permit Fee

Tay Fire and Emergency Services and Municipal Law Enforcement staff are called to a number of burning complaints each year where individuals are in non compliance of the open air burning by-law.

Emergency and enforcement staff are also called periodically about permitted open air burning that is in compliance with the open air burning by-law. These calls about permitted burning also consume staff time and resources to handle and, if necessary, investigate.

Under the old system the cost to respond and investigate these infractions were born by all residents of the Township. Council felt that the cost to respond to and investigate burning complaints should be offset by those who are burning verses all of the taxpayers of Tay Township.

After a review of the service fees in surrounding municipalities, Council approved a $20 fee for Fire Permits to offset the costs to the Tay Fire and Emergency Services Department and Township Municipal Law Enforcement staff to attend calls.
