Tay Township proclaims April 28 as National Day of Mourning
WHEREAS, the National Day of Mourning has been recognized since April 28th 1991; and
WHEREAS, on April 28th we honour the millions of Ontarians impacted by a workplace fatality, injury, or illness; and
WHEREAS, according to the Association of Workers' Compensation Boards of Canada (AWCBC), in 2023 there were 1,057 workplace fatalities recorded in Canada. Among these deaths were 29 young workers aged 15 to 24; and
WHEREAS, in addition to these fatalities there were 274,022 accepted claims for lost time due to a work-related injury or disease, including 32,861 from workers aged 15 to 24, and the fact these statistics only include what is reported by the compensation boards, there is no doubt the total number of workers impacted is even greater; and
WHEREAS, the National Day of Mourning has since spread to more than 100 countries around the world.
THEREFORE I, Ted Walker, Mayor of the Corporation of Township of Tay do hereby proclaim April 28, 2026 as NATIONAL DAY OF MOURNING for all workers killed or injured on the job in the hopes that the annual observance of this day will strengthen the resolve to establish safe conditions in the workplace for all.
Ted Walker, Mayor
