Tay Township Launches Flood Prevention Assistance Program

Tay Township is launching a new Flood Prevention Assistance Program to help homeowners whose properties may be affected by flooding, sewer backups or high groundwater during extreme weather events.

Through the program, eligible Tay homeowners can receive up to $1,500 per property toward approved flood prevention work that can help protect their homes and reduce pressure on the municipal wastewater system.

Heavy rain, snowmelt and other extreme weather events can put additional pressure on the sanitary sewer system. When sump pumps, downspouts or foundation drains are improperly connected to the sanitary sewer, clean water is sent to the wastewater treatment system where it does not belong. Disconnecting these sources can help reduce the risk of basement flooding and wastewater spills while supporting the long-term reliability of municipal infrastructure.

The program is available for existing homes connected to the municipal sanitary sewer system and does not apply to new homes. Funding may support work such as disconnecting sump pumps or downspouts from the sanitary sewer system and installing proper drainage to direct water away from the home.

Not sure how your home is connected? Some homeowners may not know that a sump pump, downspout or foundation drain is connected to the sanitary sewer system. The Township is here to help residents understand their connections and take appropriate steps to reduce flood risk.

Taking preventative action today can help protect your home during future severe weather events while helping keep unnecessary water out of Tay’s sanitary sewer system.

Residents interested in the program are encouraged to learn more before starting any work.
